Ali Baba and the forty thieves (2012 – 2014)
This project is a major milestone in the 20-year career of Azizan Paiman and addresses the issues he has been working on since he started.
Through his favorite exercise of commenting the local Malaysian politics, Paiman created a set of artworks which, behind their whimsical look, hide many layers of meanings and questioning that goes far beyond the boundaries of his country. His visual artworks not only captivates your eyes but their deep layer of meaning further seizes your brains.

“To me, it’s basically how a person can manipulate another person to kill himself—death of a soul. Previously, people needed to go to wars to kill others, but now there’s no need for it. Like, for instance, urging people to sell their agricultural lands for the sake of developments and high-rise buildings. In the end, we ended up with so many hypermarkets, now people can’t live without them. People hardly want to buy from small grocery shops these days.” – Azizan Paiman

“This piece has a quote by Zaid Ibrahim back in 2010 when he stepped in as a Pakatan Rakyat candidate in the Hulu Selangor by-election after resigning his post with Barisan Nasional. He was a rich, practicing lawyer, a millionaire who owned horses, which caused rumors to spark pretty wild—one of it being an accusation of him gambling. His comeback reply to that accusation was: “To say that I own horses and therefore I gamble, is sheer slander.” I got this frame from a second-hand store in a luxurious hotel and this painting is perfect, a period painting with these two guys and the horses, combined with the quote, and now we have a different piece of art with a totally different meaning.” – Azizan Paiman

“Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s said, “RTM should learn from the British Broadcasting System (BBC) which practices impartiality and allows the views from both sides to be heard.” This reminded me of the time I was in UK when I used to watch the parliamentary debates between William Hearst and Tony Blair on television. Their people could actually listen to the content of the conversation—so much transparency compared to how things are here. Edited, edited, edited. All of it is edited; how are we to find out if they are actually talking about the people or themselves?” – Azizan Paiman
