“A La Carte”, a solo exhibition by Azizan Paiman is organized by Fuman Art at Maison Francaise, a chic French restaurant in the heart of the Kuala Lumpur city from January to March 2014.
“It all has to do with the space it’s in. This is a restaurant, where the creation of cuisines happens; I, on the other hand, have cooked something else. This collection serves as a visual feast. We are talking about, say, Europe back in the day of post-modernism, when there were always intellectual discourses during meals—these paintings are there to serve as a subject for those chats. Most of the paintings have a quote reprinted on it, which can serve as a conversation opener; or perhaps the painting in itself does that. This collection is sort of like an inventory of my work, from 1994 all the way till now. It’s the harmonising of me. Do you know how great it is to see all your work together, especially art pieces from the ’90s? Some of the pieces here are like 14 to 15 years old, and I have not seen them since I made them. Now, they have been reinstalled into this new theme, creating a new system. Looking at them, I realise how differently I feel towards them now from what I thought of them back then.” – Azizan Paiman, 2014
